Build a Mother Plant Box

Mother Plant

A mother plant is an excellent way too collect lots of cuttings from tried and tested strains. the cannabis plants  are extremely  durable but very sensitive to  the photo period and will require at least 18 hours too 24 hours of light per day in order too remain permanently in vegetative mode. meaning the plant grows but does not flower providing you with all the cuttings you need.mother plant is the central part of any productive indoor grow operation.

Space

A  good grower should have a dedicated mother room or small grow tent as growing from cuttings is much faster than growing from seeds. giving you the advantage of flipping a your cutting over into flowering at any point, whereas you have to wait for a seedling to mature. cuttings taken from the same mother will perform in the same way over and over, so you know exactly what you’re going to get every time. also make sure you choose a good strain

Choosing a system

There are many types of systems on the market . hydroponics or a watering can will both work well. But if you really want  get a hydroponics system. A ebb and flow,  bubbler or similar single top feed bucket system are good choices but can be rather expensive but using a hydroponic system  lets you have a hand off approach and gives you more control over  your mother plant. its is important to remember as you take more cuttings from your mother plant it will become bushier and bushier. Where you remove one growth tip to take a cutting, two will take the lead in its place. And two become four, and four become eight, etc. Eventually you end up with the mother plant equivalent of an afro thunder. You can either do some pruning, or start afresh by turning a cutting into a new mother plant. When taking cuttings, think like a hairdresser and try to shape your plant so that most of it is under a good amount of light. There’s no point in letting a mother plant get too tall and pointy – take these tips out and try to develop a Xmas shaped plant instead.

Lighting

your mother plant is likely to be a vastly different size to plants that are in early veg – she needs her own dedicated light. Many growers use 125 – 250 watt compact florescent units
these seem to work well and very little heat is produced making them ideal for small grow boxes and tents

18 or 24?
Its a matter of preference there is no proof one works better than the other 18 hours of light a day or 24. just remember allowing your plants to have some “dark time” – and your mother room lighting electricity costs will be reduced too. It’s less hassle to just plug a light in rather than faff with timers many growers take the ‘lazy’ option of 24 hour light.

Air Flow

Passive should be fine through the grow box or tent venting. If your mother plant becomes very large, you could supplement this with an RVK100 style fan. Blow fresh air in at the bottom of the tent and always vent from the top as hot air rises. or try using just a few pc fans if you using cfl

So good luck everybody and remember: look after your mother and she will look after you!
